Material 1.0718, also known as 11SMnPb30 or AISI 12L14, is an unalloyed leaded free-cutting steel designed for excellent machinability. The addition of sulphur and lead enhances chip breaking and surface finish during turning, milling, and drilling operations. 1.0718 is widely used for precision turned parts, fittings, fasteners, shafts, and pins that are not subjected to high mechanical or thermal loads. The material provides excellent dimensional accuracy and allows high cutting speeds but is not suitable for welding or hardening due to its lead content.
